3.64

師云。鳥之行空。魚之在水。所託愈安。其生愈適。莊子泉涸魚相與處于陸。相呴以濕。相濡以沫。不如相忘于江湖。白兆通慧珪禪師道。譬如空中飛鳥。不知空是家鄉。水底游魚忘却水。為性命。圭峯云。魚不識水。人不識風。迷不識性。悟不識空。尋常本身盧舍那。滿淨覺者。現相人中。纔起問時。忽然影現。忘恩失行。背親向疎。果能除却靈床。始解子承父業。且道。如何是父業。拈來無不是。用處莫生疑。

The Master said: A bird moving through the air, a fish living in the water—the more secure their reliance, the more comfortable their life. Zhuangzi says, 'When the springs dry up, the fish find themselves stranded together upon the land; they puff on each other to keep moist, and moisten each other with foam—better that they forget each other in rivers and lakes.' Chan Master Gui of Baizhao, [posthumously styled] Tonghui, said, 'For example, a bird flying in the air does not know that empty space is its homeland; a fish swimming at the bottom of the water forgets the water is its nature and life.' Guifeng said, 'A fish does not know water; a person does not know wind; the deluded do not know their nature; the awakened do not know emptiness.' Ordinarily, the fundamental body Rocana, the one of complete and pure enlightenment, manifests forms among humans. As soon as a question is raised, suddenly a shadow appears. Forgetting kindness and losing proper conduct, one turns one's back on the intimate and heads toward the distant. If one can truly remove the funeral couch, only then will one understand how a son inherits the father's estate. Tell me, what is the father's estate? Picked up, there is nothing that is not it; wherever it is used, give rise to no doubt.
