4.24

舉。嚴陽尊者問趙州。一物不將來時如何（猶是分外）州云。放下著（貼体衣衫會須脫却）嚴云。一物不將來。放下箇甚麼（人不知己過牛不知力大）州云。恁麼則擔取去（喚不回頭爭奈何）。

Case: Venerable Yanyang asked Zhaozhou, 'What when not bringing along a single thing?' (Still something extraneous.) Zhaozhou said, 'Lay it down.' (Even skin-tight clothes must be stripped off.) Yanyang said, 'When I do not bring along a single thing, what is there to lay down?' (A person does not know their own faults; an ox does not know its own strength.) Zhaozhou said, 'If so, then carry it away.' (Unable to call him back, what can be done?)
