5.24

舉。進山主問脩山主云。明知生不生性。為甚麼。為生之所留（照故捩鼻木）脩云。筍畢竟成竹去。如今作篾使還得麼（鼻孔在他人手裏）進云。汝向後自悟去在（大小厭良為賤）脩云。某甲只如此。上座意旨如何（刺頭向人懷裏）進云。這箇是監院房。那箇是典座房（打得毬子別處去）脩便禮拜（且作好心相待）。

Case: Temple Director Jin asked Temple Director Xiu, 'Clearly knowing that birth is the unborn nature, why is one detained by birth?' (Illuminating the old nose-twisting wood).
Xiu said, 'A bamboo shoot will ultimately become bamboo; can it be used right now to make bamboo strips?' (His nostrils are in someone else's hands).
Jin said, 'In the future you will awaken on your own!' (Great or small, disliking the good and making it base).
Xiu said, 'I am just like this; what is the Senior Monk's purport?' (Sticking his head into someone's bosom).
Jin said, 'This is the Prior's room; that is the Chief Cook's room.' (Hitting the ball to another place).
Xiu then made prostrations (Treating him with good intentions for the time being).
