舉。瑞巖問巖頭。如何是本常理（有理不在高聲）頭云。動也（可知理也）巖云。動時如何（再犯不容）頭云。不見本常理（相物作價）巖佇思（却識慚愧）頭云。肯即未脫根塵（箇中無肯路）不肯即永沈生死（當堂不正坐那赴兩頭機）。

Case: Ruiyan asked Yantou, 'What is the fundamental principle of constant nature?' (If there is principle, it does not lie in a loud voice.) / Yantou said, 'It stirs.' (One can know the principle.) / Ruiyan said, 'When it stirs, what then?' (A second offense is not tolerated.) / Yantou said, 'You do not see the fundamental principle of constant nature.' (Pricing the goods according to their appearance.) / Ruiyan hesitated in thought. (Still knowing shame.) / Yantou said, 'If you agree, you have not escaped sense organs and objects; (in this there is no path of agreement) / if you do not agree, you will sink forever in birth and death.' (Not sitting upright in the main hall, how can one respond to the functions at both ends?)
