The Master said: The Nirvāṇa Sūtra says that when an infant cries, the mother takes a yellow leaf and says, "I give you gold," and the child stops crying. This versifies the longing for instruction and the question, "Why did you not drop a single word?" A non-Buddhist asked the Buddha, "I do not ask about what has words; I do not ask about what is wordless." The Bhagavān remained silent for a good while. The non-Buddhist then bowed and said, "The Bhagavān's great compassion has cleared away my clouds of delusion and enabled me to enter." After the non-Buddhist left, Ānanda asked the Buddha, "What principle did the non-Buddhist see to say he had entered?" The Buddha said, "Like a fine horse in the world that runs upon seeing the shadow of the whip." Yaoshan and the Bhagavān raised the whip in the same way. The director led the assembly of monks; while they had a share in bowing and praising, they instead blamed him for not dropping a single word. One can say that the patch-robed monks of the Eastern Land are inferior to the non-Buddhists of Western India. Tiantong versified it like this, and Wansong spoke like this; all of it is yellow leaves to stop crying. It is only because everyone's feverish dream has not yet ended: the light sleepers awaken at a single call, while the deep sleepers are startled only when shaken. There is yet another sort who, even when dragged upright, are still drowsy and delirious. Compared to Yaoshan's crane nesting in the moon, so clear that sleep does not come, there is a gulf between clouds and mud. Even so, there is plenty of sleep-talk.
