The Master said: Great Master Yunmen loved to make this kind of move—in the height of bustle and hundreds of clamours, slipping away halfway. One day he instructed the assembly by raising Sengzhao's Treasure Store Treatise. If completely cited, it should say: “Now, within heaven and earth, in the midst of the universe, therein is a treasure, hidden in the mountain of form. Knowing objects, it illuminates emptily; inside and outside are completely void. Silent and free of views, its function is profound and mysterious.” Xuedou raised it, saying: “Within heaven and earth, in the midst of the universe, therein is a treasure, hung upon the wall. For nine years Bodhidharma dared not look at it straight on. Today, if patched-robed monks wish to see it, a blow of the staff straight to the back!” National Preceptor Yuantong said, “Truly he is a worthy descendant of Deshan.” In the original record, as for “bringing the triple gate onto the lantern, what is it?”, he himself said on their behalf, “Following things, the intention shifts”; and again, “Thunder breaks out, clouds arise.” Foguo said: “Kumārajīva was Master Sengzhao’s tonsure master; Buddhabhadra—translated here as Awoken Worthy—of Waguan Monastery was his Dharma-transmission master. The Lamp of Inexhaustible Light places him in the lineage of Buddhabhadra’s Dharma heirs. Buddhabhadra succeeded western India's Buddhasena; Buddhasena and Bodhidharma together studied under the twenty-seventh patriarch, Prajñātāra. On the day of Sengzhao's execution, he begged for seven days’ leave and composed the Treasure Store Treatise. When Yunmen raised it to instruct the assembly, it was not for you to explain the meaning like a lecture master; he only wanted you to add a footnote. Picking up the lantern and bringing it into the Buddha hall can be measured by ordinary feelings; but can bringing the triple gate onto the lantern be measured by ordinary feelings? A fundamental lineage master never binds people with real dharmas. Therefore Xuedou said, ‘Therein is a treasure, hung upon the wall.’ If Tiantong had not borrowed it to use, it would have nearly become stagnant goods.” The verse says:
