達磨西來。不執文字。直指人心。見性成佛。說箇直指。已是迂曲。更言成佛。郎當不少。既是無門。因甚有關。老婆心切惡聲流布。無庵欲贅。一語又成四十九則。其間些子誵訛。剔起眉毛薦取。淳祐乙巳夏重刊。

Bodhidharma came from the west, not clinging to words and letters, directly pointing to the human mind, seeing into one's nature and attaining Buddhahood. Speaking of 'directly pointing' is already circuitous; further speaking of 'attaining Buddhahood' is quite disgraceful. Since it is gateless, why is there a barrier? Out of grandmotherly kindheartedness, bad reputation was spread abroad. Wu'an wishes to add a superfluity: with one more word, it becomes forty-nine cases. If there is a slight error among them, raise your eyebrows and apprehend it! Re-carved in the summer of the yisi year of the Chunyou era.
