雲門因洞山參次。門問曰。近離甚處。山云査渡。門曰夏在甚處。山云湖南報慈。門曰幾時離彼。山云八月二十五。門曰放汝三頓棒。山至明日却上問訊。昨日蒙和尚放三頓棒。不知過在甚麼處。門曰飯袋子。江西湖南便恁麼去山。於此大悟。

When Dongshan came for an interview, Yunmen asked: "Where have you recently come from?" Dongshan said: "Chadu." Yunmen said: "Where were you for the summer?" Dongshan said: "Baoci in Hunan." Yunmen said: "When did you leave there?" Dongshan said: "August twenty-fifth." Yunmen said: "I remit you three score blows." The next day Dongshan went up to make inquiries: "Yesterday I received the Upādhyāya's remittance of three score blows; I do not know where my fault lay." Yunmen said: "You rice bag! Going off in this way to Jiangxi and Hunan!" At this, Dongshan had a great awakening.
