A monk asked Upādhyāya Rang of Xingyang: "The Buddha Mahābhijñājñānābhibhū sat at the place of awakening for ten kalpas, yet the Buddha Dharma did not appear before him, and he could not attain the Buddha Way. What about this?" Rang said: "Your question is very apt." The monk asked: "Since he had sat at the place of awakening, why did he not attain the Buddha Way?" Rang said: "Because he did not become a Buddha."
