問如何是先照後用。首山云。南嶽嶺頭雲。太行山下賊。佛陀遜云。紅旗曜日催征騎。駿馬嘶風卷陣雲。道吾真云。語路分明說。投針不回避。黃龍新云。清風拂明月。五祖演云。王言如絲。

A monk asked, "What is 'first illuminate and then function'?" Shoushan said, "Clouds over the peak of the Southern Sacred Mountain; thieves below the Taihang Mountains." Fotuo Xun said, "Red banners gleam in the sun, urging on the marching cavalry; swift steeds whinny in the wind, rolling up the battle clouds." Daowu Zhen said, "The path of speech is clearly expressed; dropping the needle without evading it." Huanglong Xin said, "A clear breeze brushes the bright moon." Wuzu Yan said, "The king's words are like silk threads."
