師云。大凡演唱宗乘。一語須具三玄門。一玄門須具三要。有權有實。有照有用。汝等諸人作麼生會。後來汾陽昭和尚。因舉前話乃云。那箇是三玄三要底句。

The Master said, “Generally, when expounding the lineage vehicle, a single phrase must possess the three mysterious gates, and one mysterious gate must possess the three essentials. There is the provisional and the real; there is illumination and there is function. How do you all understand this?” Later, Venerable Fenyang Zhao, citing the previous conversation, said: “Which is the phrase of the three mysteries and three essentials?”
