師諱文偃。嘉興張氏子。受具遊方。初參睦州陳尊宿。發明心要。州指見雪峯存禪師。再蒙印可。初至靈樹。開法嗣雪峯。後遷雲門光泰寺。其道大振。天下學者。望風而至。號雲門宗。

The master's posthumous name was Wenyan, a son of the Zhang family of Jiaxing. After receiving full ordination, he traveled on pilgrimage. First he visited Venerable Chen of Muzhou, clarifying the essential mind. Muzhou directed him to see Chan Master Xuefeng Cun, where he once again received the seal of approval. At first he went to Lingshu, opening the Dharma to succeed Xuefeng. Later he moved to Guangtai Temple on Mount Yunmen, where his Way flourished greatly. Students throughout the world came following his fame, and it was called the Yunmen lineage.
