如何是共功。師曰。不得色。又曰。素粉難沈跡。長安不久居（大慧云。共功。謂法與境敵。答不得色。乃法與境不得成一色。正用時是顯無用底。無用即用也。若作一色是十成死語。洞山宗旨語忌十成。故曰不得色。乃活語也）。

"What is shared merit?"
The Master said, "Not obtaining form."
He also said, "Plain powder makes it hard to sink traces; one does not dwell long in Chang'an."
(Dahui said: "'Shared merit' means that phenomena and environment match each other. Answering 'Not obtaining form' means that phenomena and environment must not become a single form. At the very moment of function, that which is non-function is revealed; non-function is function. If made into a single form, it is completely dead words. The ancestral teachings of Dongshan taboos completely fixed words; therefore he said 'not obtaining form'—these are living words.")
