師謂曹山曰。吾在雲巖先師處。親印寶鏡三昧。事最的要。今以授汝。汝善護持。無令斷絕。遇真法器。方可傳授。直須祕密。不可彰露。恐屬流布。喪滅吾宗。末法時代人多乾慧。若要辨驗向上人之真偽。有三種滲漏。直須具眼。

The Master said to Caoshan: 'When I was at the place of the late master Yunyan, I personally received the seal of the Jewel Mirror Samādhi, which is the most essential matter. Now I confer it upon you; safeguard and maintain it well, and do not let it be cut off. Only when you encounter a genuine vessel of the Dharma may you transmit it. You must keep it secret and not display it openly, for fear that if it enters common circulation, it will destroy my lineage. In the end period of the Dharma, people will have mostly dry wisdom. If you wish to test and verify the genuineness of people on the upward path, there are three kinds of leakage. You must truly possess the eye.'
