此蓋當時義學之徒。相與造說。誣罔先聖。非毀禪宗。而自聰禪師問達觀頴和尚。凡五問欲杜邪謬。故辯詳之。

This was because students of doctrine at that time fabricated theories together to slander the former sages and malign the Chan school. Chan Master Zicong asked the venerable Daguan Ying five questions to stop these heterodox errors; therefore, he elucidated them in detail.
