僧問。蓮花未出水時如何。祚云蓮花。柱云。根深蓮蒂經殘雨。明云。水深蓋不得。鑑云。焦磚打著連底凍。出水後如何。祚云荷葉。柱云。水僊頭上實希奇。明云。不礙往來看。鑑云。揚瀾左䗍無風浪起。開後如何。明云。南北馨香。結子後如何。明云。餵魚餵鱉。

A monk asked, "What is it like before the lotus blossom emerges from the water?"
Zuo said, "A lotus blossom."
Zhu said, "Roots deep, the lotus calyx endures the lingering rain."
Ming said, "The depth of the water cannot cover it."
Jian said, "When a burnt brick strikes it, it freezes solid to the very bottom."
"What is it like after emerging from the water?"
Zuo said, "Lotus leaves."
Zhu said, "Upon the head of the water immortal, it is truly wondrous."
Ming said, "It does not hinder passersby from gazing."
Jian said, "At Yanglan and Zuo'e, waves rise without wind."
"What is it like after it opens?"
Ming said, "Fragrance north and south."
"What is it like after bearing seeds?"
Ming said, "Feeding fish, feeding turtles."
