The Master instructed the assembly, saying: 'When students from the various directions come, this mountain monk makes judgments based on three kinds of capacities. If one of medium or lower capacity comes, I snatch away their environment but do not eliminate their phenomena. If one of medium or upper capacity comes, I snatch away both environment and phenomena. If one of the highest capacity comes, I snatch away neither environment, phenomena, nor person. If a person of extraordinary view comes, this mountain monk here operates with the whole body, without going through capacities. Virtuous ones, arriving here, the place where the student exerts effort admits not a breath of wind; in the spark of a flint or a flash of lightning, it is already missed. If the student's eyes waver, there is instantly no connection.' (Whenever the heads of the Five Houses give instruction, they are referred to as 'the Master'; the rest follow this hereafter.)
