Caoshan said: "Worldly sentiments and sacred views are a mysterious road with golden locks; one must straightforwardly interpenetrate. Those who take the food of right livelihood must possess three kinds of falling: first, wearing fur and bearing horns; second, not severing sound and form; third, not receiving food." Choucouna asked, "What kind of falling is wearing fur and bearing horns?" He said, "It is falling into the [animal] species." He asked, "What kind of falling is not severing sound and form?" He said, "It is falling along with [phenomena]." He asked, "What kind of falling is not receiving food?" He said, "It is falling into the honored and noble." He then said: "Darkly tallying with the initial mind while knowing there is that which is above—this is falling into the species. Knowing there is that which is above without obstructing the six dusts—this is falling along with phenomena. Vimalakīrti said: 'The six non-Buddhist teachers are your teachers; where those teachers fall, you also fall along with them—only then may you take food.' The 'food' is the food of right livelihood. 'Food' also refers to seeing, hearing, knowing, and perceiving right at the gates of the six sense faculties; simply not being defiled by them is taken as falling, yet it is not the same as [ordinary falling]."
