One day, An instructed the assembly: 'I have three phrases: the ordinary unproduced phrase, the subtly mysterious unselfish phrase, and the substantially bright inexhaustible phrase.' At that time a monk asked, 'What is the ordinary unproduced phrase?' An said, 'White clouds cover the blue mountain; the blue mountain does not reveal its peak.' 'What is the subtly mysterious unselfish phrase?' An said, 'In the precious palace no one stands attendent in vain; by not planting wutong trees, one prevents the phoenix from coming.' 'What is the substantially bright inexhaustible phrase?' An said, 'When the hand points to the void, heaven and earth rotate; turning back on the way, the stone horse emerges from the gauze screen.'
