兩月中間，至大庾嶺，不知向後有數百人來，欲擬捉惠能，奪衣法，來至半路，盡總却迴。唯有一僧，姓陳名惠順，先是三品將軍，性行麁惡，直至嶺上，來趁把着。惠能即還法衣，又不肯取。惠順曰：「我故遠來求法，不要其衣。」能於嶺上，便傳法惠順，惠順得聞，言下心開，能使惠順即却向北化人。

In the course of two months he reached the Dayu Ridge, not knowing that behind him several hundred people were coming, intending to capture Huineng and seize the robe and Dharma. Halfway there, they all turned back. Only one monk, whose family name was Chen and given name was Huishun—formerly a general of the third rank, crude and fierce in temperament and conduct—went straight up the ridge, chasing and seizing hold of him. Huineng offered him the Dharma robe, but he refused to take it. Huishun said: "I have come from afar specifically to seek the Dharma, not wanting the robe." On the ridge, Neng then transmitted the Dharma to Huishun. Upon hearing it, Huishun's mind opened at his words. Neng had Huishun immediately turn back north to transform people.
