There was also a monk named Shenhui, a native of Xiangyang. He came to Caoxi Mountain, bowed in homage, and asked, "When the Reverend sits in dhyāna, do you see or do you not see?" The Master stood up, struck Shenhui three blows, and then asked Shenhui, "When I strike you, does it hurt or not?" Shenhui answered, saying, "It hurts, and yet it does not hurt." The Sixth Patriarch said, "I both see and do not see." Shenhui asked again, "Why does the Master both see and not see?" The Master said, "I see: I constantly see my own faults and errors, therefore I say I see. That I do not see: I do not see the faults and sins of others; therefore I both see and do not see. How is it that you both hurt and do not hurt?" Shenhui answered, saying, "If it did not hurt, I would be the same as insentient wood or stone; if it hurt, I would be the same as an ordinary person, and resentment would arise." The Master said, "Shenhui! Step forward! Seeing and not seeing are the two extremes; hurting and not hurting are arising and ceasing. When you do not even see your own-nature, how dare you come to play games with someone?" Shenhui bowed in homage, bowed again, and spoke no further. The Master said, "If your mind is deluded and does not see, ask a kalyāṇamitra to seek the path; if your mind is awakened and sees on its own, practice according to the Dharma. You yourself are deluded and do not see your own mind, yet you come to ask whether Huineng sees or not? If I know for myself, I cannot take the place of your delusion; if you see for yourself, could you take the place of my delusion? Why do you not cultivate it yourself, instead of asking whether I see or not?" Shenhui paid homage and became a disciple, not leaving Caoxi Mountain and constantly remaining by his side.
