六祖後至八月三日食後，大師言：「汝等著位坐，吾今共汝等別！」法海問言：「此頓教法傳授，從上以來至今幾代？」六祖言：「初，傳授七佛，釋迦牟尼佛第七，大迦葉第八，阿難第九，末田地第十，商那和修第十一，優婆毱多第十二，提多迦第十三，佛陀難提第十四，佛陀蜜多第十五，脇比丘第十六，富那奢第十七，馬鳴第十八，毘羅長者第十九，龍樹第二十，迦那提婆第二十一，羅睺羅第二十二，僧迦那提第二十三，僧迦耶舍第二十四，鳩摩羅馱第二十五，闍耶多第二十六，婆修盤多第二十七，摩拏羅第二十八，鶴勒那第二十九，師子比丘第三十，舍那婆斯第三十一，優婆堀第三十二，僧迦羅第三十三，須婆蜜多第三十四，南天竺國王子第三子菩提達摩第三十五，唐國僧惠可第三十六，僧璨第三十七，道信第三十八，弘忍第三十九，惠能自身當今受法第四十。」大師言：「今日以後，遞相傳授，須有依約，莫失宗旨。」

Later, on the third day of the eighth month after the meal, the Master said: "Take your seats; I will now take leave of you!" Fahai asked, saying: "From the beginning down to the present, through how many generations has this sudden teaching Dharma been transmitted?" The Sixth Patriarch said: "Initially, it was transmitted through the seven Buddhas, Śākyamuni Buddha being the seventh; Mahākāśyapa was the eighth, Ānanda the ninth, Madhyāntika the tenth, Śāṇakavāsa the eleventh, Upagupta the twelfth, Dhṛtaka the thirteenth, Buddhanandi the fourteenth, Buddhamitra the fifteenth, Bhikṣu Pārśva the sixteenth, Puṇyayaśas the seventeenth, Aśvaghoṣa the eighteenth, the elder Kapimala the nineteenth, Nāgārjuna the twentieth, Kāṇadeva the twenty-first, Rāhulata the twenty-second, Saṅghanandi the twenty-third, Saṅghayaśas the twenty-fourth, Kumāralāta the twenty-fifth, Jayata the twenty-sixth, Vasubandhu the twenty-seventh, Manorhita the twenty-eighth, Haklenayaśas the twenty-ninth, Bhikṣu Siṃha the thirtieth, Śāṇavāsa the thirty-first, Upagupta the thirty-second, Saṅgharakṣa the thirty-third, Śubhamitra the thirty-fourth, Bodhidharma, the third son of the king of South India, the thirty-fifth, the monk Huike of the Tang country the thirty-sixth, Sengcan the thirty-seventh, Daoxin the thirty-eighth, Hongren the thirty-ninth, and Huineng myself am the fortieth to currently receive the Dharma." The Master said: "From this day forward, transmit it successively from one to the next; there must be an accord, so do not lose the essential tenet."
