At the third watch of the night, the Fifth Patriarch summoned Huineng into the hall and expounded the Vajracchedikā. As soon as Huineng heard it, he awakened at his words. That night he received the Dharma without anyone knowing; [the Master] then transmitted the sudden teaching Dharma and the robe, establishing him as the sixth-generation patriarch. "The robe is to serve as a token of inheritance, transmitted from generation to generation; the Dharma is transmitted from mind to mind, and you must cause [others] to awaken for themselves." The Fifth Patriarch said: "Huineng! Since ancient times, the transmission of the Dharma has hung as if by a thread. If you remain here, someone will harm you; you must leave immediately."
