Huineng's coming to this place is also due to karmic causes over many kalpas with all the officials, clergy, and laity. The teaching is what former sages transmitted; it is not Huineng's own invention. Those who wish to hear the teaching of the former sages must each purify their minds. Having heard it, may you eradicate your own delusions, just as former generations awakened. (The Dharma follows below.) Master Huineng called out: "Kalyāṇamitras! The wisdom of bodhi and prajñā is originally possessed by the people of this world. It is only because their minds are deluded that they cannot awaken by themselves; they must seek a great kalyāṇamitra to show them the path to see the nature. Kalyāṇamitras! Between foolish people and wise people, the buddhadhātu originally has no difference. It is only because of delusion and awakening: when deluded, one is foolish; when awakened, one becomes wise.
