"Now that the four vast vows have been made, I shall transmit the formless repentance to you kalyāṇamitras to extinguish the karmic hindrances of the three periods of time." The Master said: "Kalyāṇamitras! Past thoughts, future thoughts, and present thoughts—thought after thought not being defiled by foolish delusion. Removing all former evil actions at once: if eliminated from one's own-nature, that is repentance. Past thoughts, future thoughts, and present thoughts—thought after thought not being defiled by ignorance; eradicating past deceitful and arrogant minds, cutting them off forever is called the repentance of one's own-nature. Past thoughts, future thoughts, and present thoughts—thought after thought not being defiled by jealousy; eradicating past envious minds, if eliminated from one's own-nature, that is repentance." (Chanted three times above.) "Kalyāṇamitras! What is called repentance? Repentance means not committing [faults] for the rest of one's life; contrition means knowing past errors. If evil karma never leaves the mind, speaking with one's mouth before the Buddhas is of no benefit. In this Dharma door of mine, cutting off forever and not committing them again is called repentance."
