"The foolish cultivate merit but do not cultivate the Way, / Saying that cultivating merit is indeed the Way.
Giving and offerings bring boundless merit, / Yet the three karmas remain in the mind as before.
If one seeks to eradicate sins through cultivating merit, / In future lives one will gain merit, but the sins still remain.
If one understands how to turn inward and remove the conditions for sin, / That is true repentance within one's own-nature.
If one awakens to the true repentance of the Mahāyāna, / Removing wrong and practicing right, one will be without sin.
If one who studies the Way can observe oneself, / One is of the same kind as an awakened person.
Huineng now transmits this sudden teaching, / Wishing that those who study it will become of one body.
If you wish to seek the dharmakāya in the future, / Wash away the evil conditions of the three poisons within your mind.
Strive to cultivate the Way; do not drift along, / Lest your single life suddenly pass in vain and end.
If you encounter the Dharma of the sudden teaching of the Mahāyāna, / Reverently join your palms and seek it with the utmost mind."
