When the Master had finished speaking the verses, he then told his disciples: "Farewell, all of you! I now take leave of you. After I am gone, do not weep with worldly emotions, nor receive condolences, money, and silks from others, nor wear mourning clothes; that would not be the noble Dharma and you would not be my disciples. Just as when I was alive, at all times sit upright: merely be without movement and without stillness, without birth and without death, without going and without coming, without right and without wrong, non-abiding, serenely quiescent—that is the Great Path. After I am gone, simply cultivate according to the Dharma, just as when I was alive. If I were in the world and you violated the teaching of the Dharma, my staying would be of no benefit." After the Master spoke these words, at the third watch of the night, he suddenly passed away. The Master was seventy-six years of age.
