"The birth of the Ultimate Person / belongs to no specific kind; / identical with others in form, / surpassing others in wisdom. / In the bustling southern lands, / an extraordinary hero was born; / father as Qian and mother as Kun, / he uniquely resembled the primal pneumas. / With a single word he had sudden awakening, / not treading the initial ground; / five masters succeeded one another, / transmitting to him the treasured vessel. / Sitting peacefully at Caoxi, / the world called it the Southern School; / students then arrived, / like waters flowing eastward. / Giving them wondrous medicine to drink, / curing their muteness and deafness; / imperial decrees could not bring him, / he was acclaimed a hero of the Dharma. / Distant from the days of the Buddha, / countless words accumulated; / clinging to emptiness and seizing existence, / each ran to their own realm. / I set up the true expedient, / raising it up in the southern realm: / cultivating without cultivation, / attaining without attainment. / Able to make students / return to their celestial cognition; / like those who are blind and lost, / raising their eyes to the Northern Dipper. / Attained naturally, / in the end it cannot be transmitted; / spoken by mouth and handed by hand, / it is obstructed by existence. / Leaving the robe in the empty hall, / he who attains it receives it from Heaven."
