In the first year of Shangyuan [760 CE], Emperor Suzong dispatched an envoy to invite the Master's robe and bowl to be brought to the imperial palace for veneration. In the first year of Yongtai [765 CE], on the fifth day of the fifth month, Emperor Daizong dreamed that the Great Master the Sixth Patriarch requested the robe and bowl. On the seventh day, an imperial edict was issued to Prefect Yang Jian, stating: "In a dream We were moved by Chan Master Neng requesting that the transmitted kāṣāya robe be returned to Caoxi. Now We dispatch the Grand General Protecting the State, Liu Chongjing, to bear it respectfully upon his head and convey it. We consider it a national treasure; you, Minister, may enshrine it properly in the monastery according to the Dharma, and specially order the monks who have personally inherited the fundamental宗旨 [purport] to guard it strictly, not allowing it to be lost." Later, it was stolen on several occasions, but each time it was recovered before being carried far. This happened four times. Emperor Xianzong conferred the posthumous title 'Chan Master Dajian', and named his stupa 'Yuanhe Lingzhao'. His remaining biographical records are inscribed on steles by the Tang Minister Wang Wei, Prefect Liu Zongyuan, Prefect Liu Yuxi, and others. Recorded by the stupa-guarding śramaṇa Lingtao.
