1.30

「書此偈已，徒眾總驚，無不嗟訝，各相謂言：『奇哉！不得以貌取人，何得多時使他肉身菩薩。』祖見眾人驚怪，恐人損害，遂將鞋擦了偈，曰：『亦未見性。』眾以為然。

"When this verse had been written, the disciples were all amazed, and every one of them marveled, saying to one another: 'How extraordinary! One cannot judge people by their appearance; how could we have put a flesh-body bodhisattva to work for so long?' Seeing everyone's astonishment and fearing that someone might harm him, the Patriarch rubbed the verse out with his shoe and said: 'This too has not seen into its nature.' The assembly took it to be so.
