The Master instructed the assembly, saying: "Good friends! Ekavyūha-samādhi means constantly practicing the straightforward mind at all places, whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down. The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says: 'The straightforward mind is the bodhimanda; the straightforward mind is the pure land.' Do not let the mind act crookedly while the mouth only speaks of being straightforward; do not speak of ekavyūha-samādhi with the mouth while not practicing the straightforward mind. Simply practice the straightforward mind, and have no attachment to any dharma. Deluded people cling to dharma characteristics and grasp onto ekavyūha-samādhi, plainly declaring: 'Constantly sitting without moving, with no deluded thoughts arising in the mind—this is ekavyūha-samādhi.' Those who make this interpretation are the same as insentient things, and it is actually a cause and condition that obstructs the Way. Good friends! The Way must flow freely; why should it instead be obstructed? When the mind does not abide in dharmas, the Way flows freely; if the mind abides in dharmas, it is called self-binding. If you say that constantly sitting without moving is right, that is just like Śāriputra sitting quietly in the forest, only to be rebuked by Vimalakīrti. Good friends! There are also people who teach sitting, gazing at the mind and contemplating stillness, neither moving nor arising, and from this establishing effort. Deluded people do not understand and grasp onto it, becoming deranged. There are many such people; teaching each other in this way, one should know it is a great mistake."
