One day, the Master wished to wash the robe he had received, but there was no fine spring. He therefore went about five li behind the monastery, where he saw dense and luxuriant mountain woods with auspicious vapors swirling about. The Master struck the ground with his staff; the spring welled up at his touch and collected to form a pool. He then knelt and washed the robe upon a rock. Suddenly, a monk came and paid homage, saying, "Fangbian is a man of western Shu. Recently, in South India, I saw Great Master Bodhidharma, who instructed Fangbian: 'Make haste to the land of Tang. I transmitted the Treasury of the True Dharma Eye of Mahākāśyapa and the saṅghāṭī, which has now been transmitted to the sixth generation at Caoxi in Shaozhou. Go pay reverence to him.' Fangbian has come from afar, wishing to see the robe and bowl transmitted by my master."
The Master then brought them out and displayed them, and next asked, "Superior one, what craft do you practice?"
He replied, "I am skilled at sculpting."
The Master said with a stern face, "Try sculpting one for me to see."
Fangbian was at a loss. After several days, he completed a true likeness, about seven inches high, which captured its wondrousness to the utmost.
The Master smiled and said, "You only understand the nature of sculpting; you do not understand the Buddha-nature."
The Master stretched out his hand and rubbed Fangbian's crown, saying, "May you forever be a field of merit for gods and humans."
