"Bodhidharma worked diligently, / transmitting the Buddha's mind of speech; / six times was the transmission received, / and Dajian came to it. / Hardworking, dedicated, and silent, / he finally drew from the depths; / holding the vessel of faith, / he traveled along the southern shores. / There his Way was put into practice, / in Caoxi's vale; / diverse crowds gathered together, / yet did not diminish his loftiness. / Transmitting and preaching, all was expounded, / only the Way was praised; / born with a good nature, / it is complete in all things. / Wildly drifting and rushing astray, / their inclinations became ten thousandfold; / without thought, turmoil worsens, / without awareness, errors multiply. / Through the Master's inner mirror, / all attained their original simplicity; / not planting the root, / not weeding the sprout. / One within, harmonized without, / pure and brightly shining; / under Emperor Zhongzong, / words were invited to the court. / Secretly aiding the royal standards, / causing people to wander free and easy; / past one hundred and six years, / his posthumous title was not recorded. / Thanks to the Duke of Fufeng, / report was made to the present Son of Heaven; / the Ministry of Rites having reported the great conduct, / an eulogy shone on the southern soil. / His Dharma arose once more, / his disciples in their myriad millions / both mourned and rejoiced together. / Wherever the Master's transformation reached, / and wherever the Duke of Fufeng stepped, / all honored the Son of Heaven. / The Son of Heaven's fine decree / praised the Duke's virtuous beauty; / overflowing unto the island barbarians, / this is what the Buddha's teachings attend to. / The Master transmitted through benevolence, / the Duke governed through benevolence; / requesting words to be carved on enduring stone, / forever to be passed on without end."
