"Huineng later reached Caoxi, but was again pursued by evil people. Thereupon I took refuge in Sihui among a band of hunters, spending fifteen years in all, from time to time expounding the Dharma to the hunters as appropriate. The hunters often had me watch the nets; whenever I saw living creatures, I released them all. Whenever mealtime came, I placed vegetables into the meat pot to cook. If anyone asked, I replied: 'I only eat the vegetables beside the meat.'
