"When the mind is level, what need to uphold the precepts? / When action is straightforward, what use is cultivating dhyāna? / For kindness, filially support your parents; / For righteousness, superiors and inferiors have pity on one another. / Through deference, the noble and humble live in harmony; / Through forbearance, the manifold evils produce no clamour. / If you can drill wood to bring forth fire, / The mud will surely bring forth red lotuses. / That which is bitter to the mouth is good medicine; / That which grates on the ear is surely loyal counsel. / Correcting errors will surely produce wisdom; / Defending faults within the mind is not virtue. / In daily use, constantly benefit others; / Attaining the Way does not come from bestowing money. / Bodhi is sought only in the mind; / What need to toil seeking the profound outside? / Having heard this, cultivate practice in accordance with it; / The West is right before your eyes."
