Tenth, once karma is accomplished it is hard to escape, just as a shadow or echo responds to a form or sound; therefore, one undergoes the marks of suffering and pleasure bound by karma in the six destinies. (Like in a dream, due to stealing, robbing, beating, or scolding, one is captured, put in cangues, imprisoned, and punished; or due to practicing kindness, one receives retribution through recommendation and appointment to an official post.) The sequence of arising of the above ten stages has a clear progression with connected bloodlines. If one only examines and illuminates them by contemplating the mind in accordance with principle, they will be vividly apparent. Next, to discern cultivation and realization after awakening, there are also ten stages of overturning the deluded into the true, because there is no other dharma. However, the meanings of delusion and awakening differ, and their direct and reverse orders are distinct: the former was straying from the true to pursue the deluded, arising in forward sequence from subtle to coarse; the latter is awakening from the deluded to return to the true, severing in reverse sequence from coarse and heavy to subtle. Because the wisdom capable of overturning goes from shallow to deep, coarse obstructions are easy to dispel, so shallow wisdom can overturn them; subtle confusions are difficult to remove, so only deep wisdom can sever them. Therefore, the latter ten, in reverse sequence from the end, overturn and crush the previous ten; only the last one and the first two have a slight difference. Below, the ten stages will be shown.
