Answer: The dharma of no-dharma is called the true Dharma; the awakening of no-awakening is called the true awakening. Then the wondrous nature has no locus of reliance, and natural genuineness is brilliantly clear. A verse of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'The Buddha-Dharma cannot be awakened to; comprehending this is called awakening to dharmas. All Buddhas cultivate in this way; not a single dharma can be attained.' The Sūtra of the Inscriptionless Jewel Casket says: 'At that time the Bodhisattva Viśeṣacinti addressed the Buddha, saying: "What single dharma is realized, awakened to, and known by the Tathāgata?" [The Buddha said:] "Good son, there is not a single dharma awakened to by the Tathāgata. Good son, having no awakening toward dharmas is the Tathāgata's awakening. Good son, all dharmas do not arise, yet the Tathāgata realizes and awakens to them; all dharmas do not cease, yet the Tathāgata realizes and awakens to them."' Therefore, if there is awakening, one is just a sentient being; if there is no awakening, one is identical to wood and stone—both are not the true nature and do not accord with objectless condition. The awakening of no-awakening only then matches the great purport: because of no-awakening, it is not the same as sentient beings; because of awakening, it is not like wood and stone. Thus, one awakening is all awakening; there is no awakening and no non-awakening. Because of no-awakening, the understanding of prajñā is quiescent; because of no non-awakening, the open mind brilliantly reflects. Furthermore, seeing that the mind constantly abides is called awakening. One accomplishment is all accomplishment; one awakening is all awakening. Words are exhausted and thoughts terminated, without destroying provisional designations. Therefore it is said: 'First achieving right awakening.'
