答。明鏡屬佛。像不屬佛。像若屬佛。佛則生滅流動。像若屬眾生。眾生業結所縛。何能具此相好。但感應道交。方見此耳。

Answer: The bright mirror belongs to the Buddha, but the reflection does not belong to the Buddha. If the reflection belonged to the Buddha, then the Buddha would be subject to arising, ceasing, and fluctuating. If the reflection belonged to sentient beings, sentient beings are bound by karmic knots—how could they possess these physical marks and characteristics? It is only when resonance and response mutually intersect that this is seen.
