21.14

問。所明淨土。敬如高旨。但尋玄宗。不以事為淨。淨取無穢。此即行業不同。報至不雜。是以石沙之人。不得同天踐七珍之土。今疑畜生業與人異。而同履石沙之地。以乖所立義耶。

Question: Regarding the pure land explained above, I respectfully accept your exalted purport. But investigating the profound source, it does not take concrete phenomena as pure; purity is understood as freedom from defilement. This means karmic practices differ and their ripening retributions do not mix. Thus people of stone and sand cannot tread upon the land of the seven precious treasures together with devas. Now I wonder: the karma of animals differs from that of humans, yet they tread together upon the earth of stone and sand—does this contradict the established principle?
