34.17

答。為未直下頓悟之人。不無方便。如方便心論云。若就喻者。凡聖同解。然後可說。如言是心動發。猶如迅風。一切凡夫知風動故。便得決了心為輕躁。若不知者。不得為喻。

Answer: For those who have not directly and suddenly awakened, there must be skillful means. As the Fangbian xin lun says: 'Regarding metaphors, when the ordinary person and the sage share the same understanding, then one may speak. As when one says: "The arising and movement of this citta is like a swift wind." Because all ordinary persons know that wind moves, they then can resolve and understand that the citta is flighty and restless. If they did not know it, it could not serve as a metaphor.'
