答。且前五識。有漏位中。唯現量緣實五塵境。第八唯現量緣三境故。種子根身器世間境。性唯無記。第七有漏位中。常緣第八見分為境。非量所收。今能觀心。因教比知變起相分。比量善性獨影境攝故。唯第六有此功能。

Answer: For the first five consciousnesses, in the defiled state, take the actual objects of the five dusts as conditions solely through actual perception. The eighth solely takes three objects as conditions through actual perception—the objects of seeds, the sensory faculties with the body, and the receptacle world—and its nature is solely indeterminate. The seventh, in the defiled state, constantly takes the darśanabhāga of the eighth as its object, which is subsumed under non-valid cognition. Now the contemplating mind, in reliance upon teaching, through inferential knowledge transforms and brings forth the nimittabhāga; because it is subsumed under inferential cognition, the wholesome nature, and the solitary image object, only the sixth has this capacity.
