問。祖佛大意。貴在心行。採義徇文。只益戲論。所以文殊訶阿難云。將聞持佛佛。何不自聞聞。爭如一念還原。深諧遺旨。

Question: The great import of the patriarchs and the buddhas values practice in citta; gathering meanings and following the letter only increases frivolous debate. Therefore Mañjuśrī reproached Ānanda, saying: “Using hearing to hold the buddhas’ teachings, / why not yourself hear your own hearing?” How does that compare to returning to the source in a single thought, deeply harmonizing with the bequeathed purport?
