Answer: There are two kinds of transformation: first, transformation as cause; second, transformation as fruition. The Vijñaptimātratāsiddhiśāstra states: “There are two kinds of transforming [consciousness]: First, transformation as cause, which refers to the two kinds of causal vāsanās within the eighth consciousness—namely, karmic outflow (niṣyanda) and maturation (vipāka). The karmic outflow vāsanās are perfumed and caused to grow by the wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate [states] among the seven consciousnesses. The maturation vāsanās are perfumed and caused to grow by the tainted wholesome and unwholesome [states] among the six consciousnesses. Second, transformation as fruition: this refers to the arising of the eight consciousnesses manifesting various characteristics through the power of the preceding two kinds of vāsanās. Due to the causal condition of the karmic outflow vāsanās, the substances and characteristics of the eight consciousnesses arise in their distinctions; this is called the karmic outflow fruition, because the fruit resembles the cause. With the maturation vāsanās serving as the predominant condition, they induce the eighth consciousness to requite the power of leading karma; because it is constantly continuous, the name ‘maturation’ is established. Those that induce the first six consciousnesses to requite completing karma arise from maturation and are called ‘born of maturation’—they are not called ‘maturation’ because they have interruption. The aforementioned maturation and what is born of maturation are called the maturation fruition, because the fruit differs from the cause.” Here we are provisionally speaking of the transforming fruition-consciousness that grasps and holds the tainted seeds through self-love, which is termed maturation.
