48.22

又問。如前六識所變五塵相分。不能自熏新種。須假能變心緣。方能熏自種故。五塵相分得為能熏。其極劣無記。亦假能變心緣。何故不同五塵相分。得為能熏。

He also asked: 'Just as the nimittabhāga of the five sense objects transformed by the first six consciousnesses cannot perfume new seeds of itself, but must rely on the perceiving consciousness taking it as object before it can perfume its own seeds—and therefore the nimittabhāga of the five sense objects can be what perfumes—the extremely weak indeterminate [states] also rely on the perceiving consciousness taking them as object; why are they not the same as the nimittabhāga of the five sense objects in being able to perfume?'
