Answer: The scripture clarifies that whether perfuming or transforming, both are inconceivable. Drawing upon how they are stirred according with conditions, the characteristics of perfuming and transforming are made apparent. When fundamental avidyā perfumes inherent enlightenment, inherent enlightenment follows the movement; hence it is called perfuming. Furthermore, although the substance of inherent enlightenment in principle does not change, because it accords with conditions, it is called transforming. Even though there is perfuming and transforming, it is defiled without being defiled; even though there is no perfuming and transforming, it is not defiled yet defiled. It cannot be measured by thought or mind, hence it is said to be 'inconceivable perfuming.' It cannot be expressed in words or phrases, hence it is said to be 'inconceivable transformation.'
