答。定依根發。百法云。眼識依根發識。乃至意識亦爾。若眼根變異。眼識必隨變異。如眼病所見青色為黃色。此不是壞境。但是根損。令識取境。變為黃色。故知隨根得名。

Answer: They definitely arise relying on the faculties. The Baifa says: "The eye-consciousness arises relying on the faculty, and so on up to the mental consciousness." If the eye-faculty undergoes transformation, the eye-consciousness necessarily follows its transformation. For example, when due to an eye disease what is seen as blue appears as yellow: this is not an impairment of the object; it is merely that the faculty is damaged, causing the consciousness that apprehends the object to transform it into yellow. Therefore, we know it derives its name following the faculty.
