答。具三識。第八先託佛無漏聲名句文。為本質了。耳識緣聲。意識同時緣名句文等。方得名聞。

Answer: Three consciousnesses are present. The eighth first takes the Buddha's undefiled sounds, names, phrases, and syllables as the fundamental substance (vastu); the ear consciousness conditions the sound, and the manovijñāna simultaneously conditions the names, phrases, syllables, and so forth. Only then is it called 'hearing'.
