答。是界分建立義。以內外中間。各對待立故。雜集論云。一切法種子義。謂依阿賴耶識中諸法種子。說名為界。界是因義。又能持自相義。又能持因果性義。又攝持一切法差別義。

Answer: It has the meaning of establishing boundaries and divisions, because the internal, external, and intermediate are each established in opposition. The *Samuccaya* says: 'It has the meaning of the seed of all dharmas: that is, based on the seeds of all dharmas within the ālayavijñāna, they are designated as dhātu. Dhātu has the meaning of cause. Furthermore, it has the meaning of being able to uphold its own specific characteristics; it also has the meaning of being able to uphold the nature of cause and effect; and it also has the meaning of subsuming and upholding the differences of all dharmas.'
