識論問云。以有阿含證驗知故。若但心識虛妄分別見外境界。不從色等外境界生眼識等者。以何義故。如來說眼色等十二種入。明知有色香味等外境界也。

In the Vijñānasiddhi, a question is asked: 'Because there is evidence and proof from the Āgamas, if the mind and consciousness merely see external spheres through false discrimination and eye-consciousness and the rest are not produced from external spheres such as forms, then for what reason did the Tathāgata teach the twelve kinds of āyatanas, such as the eye and form? It is clearly known that external spheres such as forms, smells, and tastes exist.'
