答。離俱有根。必不轉故。意云。若無所依根時。其心心所定不得轉。三等無間緣依者。等無間依即狹。唯取心王。心王有主義故。若四緣中等無間緣即寬。雙通心心所。為前念心王有力。能引生後念一聚心心所法。名等。以力用齊等故。無自類為間隔。名無間。

The meaning is: when there is no faculty on which to rely, those minds and mental factors definitely cannot operate. Third, the basis as equal-and-immediate condition: the equal-and-immediate basis is narrow, taking only consciousness-kings, because consciousness-kings have the sense of dominance. As for the equal-and-immediate condition among the four conditions, it is broad, applying to both mind and mental factors. Because the preceding consciousness-king has efficacy and can lead to the generation of the collection of minds and mental factors of the succeeding moment, it is called 'equal', as their power and function are equal; having no hindrance from their own kind, it is called 'immediate'.
